2005 – 2011 : formation et premier album Make Things Happen

Birth of Joy s’est formé en 2005 à Utrecht (Pays-Bas) autour de Kevin Stunnenberg (chant, guitare), Bob Hogenelst (batterie) et Gertjan Gutman (basse, claviers). Son nom est une référence au livre The Birth of Tragedy de Friedrich Nietzsche. En 2010, le trio sort un premier album auto-produit intitulé Make Things Happen. Ce disque est ré-édité l’année suivante par le label indépendant Suburban Records. Ce dernier avait signé le groupe suite à une prestation donnée au festival hollandais Zwarte Cross.

2012 – 2014 : Life in Babalou et Prisoner

Le 3 mars 2012, Birth of Joy livre son deuxième opus Life in Babalou. L’année suivante, paraît la compilation The Sound of Birth of Joy via le label indépendant Modulor Records. Le 3 mars 2014, le trio revient avec son troisième album Prisoner. Ce disque est produit par Joris Wolff (De Staat, Within Temptation, Mister and Mississippi) et masterisé par Brian Lucey (The Black Keys, Arctic Monkeys, David Lynch).

2015 – 2018 : Get Well, Hyper Focus et séparation

Le 26 février 2016, Birth of Joy livre son quatrième opus Get Well. Tout comme son prédécesseur, ce disque est produit par Joris Wolff. Le 16 février 2018, le trio revient avec un cinquième album intitulé Hyper Focus via le label indépendant Glitterhouse Records. Le 27 septembre 2018, Birth of Joy annonce officiellement sa séparation.
