2011 – 2012 : formation et premier album Orkney: Symphony of the Magnetic North

The Magnetic North s’est formé en 2011 à Londres (Angleterre) autour de Simon Tong (guitare, ex-The Verve, ex-Blur), Gawain Erland Cooper (chant, guitare, Erland and the Carnival) et Hannah Peel (chant, multi-instrument).

Le 7 mai 2012, le trio sort son premier album Orkney: Symphony of the Magnetic North. Ce disque a été enregistré sur l’île écossaise d’Orkney et il est directement inspiré par l’histoire de Betty Corrigall, une jeune femme qui, au XVIIIe siècle, s’est suicidée après avoir été bannie du village pour être tombée enceinte d’un mystérieux marin.

**2013 – 2021 : deuxième album Prospect of Skelmersdale et pause**

Le 18 mars 2016, The Magnetic North propose son deuxième album Prospect of Skelmersdale via le label indépendant Full Time Hobby/PIAS. Pour ce nouvel opus, le groupe puise son inspiration dans l’histoire de la ville nouvelle de Skelmersdale (Angleterre) fondée en 1960.

Par la suite, les membres du groupe se concentrent sur d’autres projets. En 2017, Hannah Peel sort l’album solo Mary Casio: Journey to Cassiopeia. L’année suivante, Erland Cooper livre l’album solo Solan Goose. En 2019, Simon Tong apparaît sur l’album de The Good, the Bad and the Queen Merrie Land.
